The village of Wool has been targeted by animal rights activists, who say it should change its name to ‘Vegan Wool’.
PETA director Elisa Allen wrote to Wool Parish Council asking for the change to “promote kindness to sheep”.
She said the charity would give all the village’s 2,000 residents a free ‘cruelty-free’ blanket if they agreed.
Local county councillor Cherry Brooks said the request had “caused quite a stir in the village” but most people found it amusing. Mrs Brooks said the village name was actually derived from the Anglo-Saxon ‘wyllon’, meaning ‘well’, and had nothing to do with the wool industry.
